IBM puts business content in motion for mobile workforce, speeds access to big data through mobile devices IBM today introduced new software that helps employees tap into the broadest range of business information to do their jobs more effectively from their desktops, mobile phones and tablets. The new offering allows traditional and mobile workers to securely access, manage and gain insight from structured and unstructured content such as emails, documents, images, Web data and collaboration tools to improve productivity. ------------------------------------------------------------------- ECM: solutions for diverse content KMWorld Magazine writes about the growth of data and how content access is evolving to take into account the explosion in social technologies, including wikis, blogs and videos. Content used to be a lot simpler. It consisted of documents and data. Together, those two categories encompassed most of the digital information used in organizations. Now, not only the volume but also the variety of data has increased to include videos, digital audio, wikis, blogs and little snippets of microblogging content. The purchase price is approximately US$2.3 billion, approximately two billion of which will be paid in cash and the balance in Lenovo stock. ------------------------------------------------------------------- IBM Reports 2013 Fourth-Quarter and Full-Year Results IBM today announced fourth-quarter 2013 diluted earnings of $5.73 per share, compared with diluted earnings of $5.13 per share in the fourth quarter of 2012, an increase of 12 percent. The news comes at this year’s National Retail Federation convention (#NRF14), where IBM also unveiled a new solution that helps retailers and marketers update their online storefronts in minutes with fresh, relevant and targeted content. ------------------------------------------------------------------- IBM Sets U.S. Patent Record IBM today announced that its inventors received a record-setting 6,809 patents in 2013 – the 21st consecutive year the company topped the annual list of U.S. patent leaders. ------------------------------------------------------------------- 7,500 IBM Jobs Will Go To Lenovo With Unit Sale Approximately 7,500 IBM employees around the world, including those based at major locations such as Raleigh, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Taipei, are expected to be offered employment by Lenovo. Employees had previously told Business Insider that this unit was the target of some of IBM's layoffs last summer. IBM took a $1 billion charge in 2013 for what it calls "workforce rebalancing," and some experts said that this amounted to between 6,000 and 8,000 jobs cut worldwide. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Video: Apple's Mac Celebrates 30 Years; Dell, IBM Envy Success Apple is celebrating Mac's 30th birthday and a lot has changed over the past thirty years. Inflation is better now than it was in 1984 and the Mac is cheaper. Interest rates are much lower thanks to the Federal Reserve, even if home prices have doubled. Many computer companies like Tandy and Commodore are either gone are gobbled up by others and while Dell and IBM are still around, they are not nearly as competitive. Just surviving in today's computer world is cause for celebration.
